Illinois Non-Profit Hospitals Net Assets Up 92% Under Obama and the Affordable Care Act

From a review of the Electronic Municipal Market Access (EMMA), I found 17 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations headquartered in the State of Illinois with Net Assets (i.e. Financial Strength or Total Assets minus Total Liabilities) at the most recent date of more than $400 mil each.  Below here are the Net Assets of these 17 at both the most recent reported date and also at the Fiscal Year End (FYE) closest to the beginning of the Obama Administration:

Total all 17

      27,350

      14,219 92%

As you can see from the above chart, the Total Net Assets (Financial Strength) of these 17 Illinois Non-Profit Hospital Organizations increased by a spectacular 92% to a massive $27.350 bil so far during the Obama Administration.

To illustrate just how hot these 17 Illinois Hospitals were very recently on the Net Asset growth front, in just the past 12 months, the Total Net Assets percentage increase during the Obama Administration grew from 64% growth to 92% growth.

The more I study these just incredible Net Asset growth percentage increases in Non-Profit Hospitals  all over the US, the more I have to conclude that Obama is not just the Stock Market President and the IPO President, but also the Hospital President.

Very positively impacting this spectacular increase in the Net Assets (Financial Strength) of these 17 Illinois Hospital Organizations were actions taken by both the Obama Administration and the US Fed to strengthen the US Financial Foundation which was severely damaged from the financial meltdown in late 2008.

In addition, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has also played a key role in this very robust increase in Net Assets (Financial Strength) of these 17 Illinois Non-Profit Hospital Organizations.

A remarkable thing is that these very robust increases in Net Assets (Financial Strength) of these Non-Profit Hospital Organizations occurred when these Non-Profit Hospitals, and especially the Illinois ones, were also playing very instrumental roles in the substantial annual percentage growth reduction of Total US Health Care Costs which occurred in each of the most recent three years under the ACA.

With such very impressive Net Asset percentage increases of these 17 Illinois Hospitals, a key beneficiary of this has been and will continue to be Illinois citizens electing to buy health insurance on the Health Insurance Exchange.  This very strong Net Asset growth gives these Illinois Hospitals the financial flexibility to moderate their pricing for hospital procedures in their negotiations with health insurance companies which ultimately determines what insurance premium prices are set at by health insurance companies on the Health Insurance Exchange.

Cook County Health and Hospital System

Cook County Health and Hospital System is a Non-Profit Governmental Entity.

Since the hospitals included in the Cook County Health and Hospital System are safety net hospitals and since the Chicago area is so huge, the Cook County Health and Hospital System has accumulated massive Operating Losses, which from its financial statements in EMMA totaled $418 mil in the Fiscal Year Ended November 2012 and a massive $2.279 bil for the 5 years ended November 2012.

But the very positive aspect to this is that the State of Illinois has fully expanded Medicaid.  So with the resultant massive inflow of Patient Revenues from Medicaid expansion, the Cook County Health and Hospital System should be able to make a huge dent in reducing these massive losses and perhaps even turn these massive losses into profits.

One of the key beneficiaries of this very healthy improvement in the Total Net Assets of the the Cook County Health and Hospital System due to Medicaid expansion in Illinois will be Illinois citizens electing to buy health insurance on the Health Insurance Exchange.  This exceptional Net Asset growth gives the hospitals in the Cook County Health and Hospital System as well as all Illinois Hospitals the financial flexibility to moderate their pricing for hospital and other health care procedures in their negotiations with health insurance companies which ultimately determines what insurance premium prices are set at by health insurance companies on the Health Insurance Exchange.
