48 Largest US Savings & Loans Banks Average Stock Prices Down 45% Due to Financial Meltdown Spillover Effects, Then Up 182% Under Obama and the US Fed

I found 48 US Savings & Loans Banks classified in the Financial Sector at Yahoo's superb Finance website with current Total Market Capitalizations of at least $100 mil each and which also had their common stocks trading on each of the following three dates:

  • On December 31, 2007 during President Bush's second term
  • On March 6, 2009, very early in President Obama's first term, which was their lowest point due to the spillover effects resulting from the 2008 financial meltdown, and
  • also on the most recent date January 31, 2014.

The historical common stock prices of these companies were obtained from the following two excellent internet resources....  Google Finance and MarketWatch Big Charts.

These 48 US Savings & Loans Banks had their average stock prices drop by a huge 45% from December 31, 2007 during President Bush's second Presidential term, to March 6, 2009, very early in President Obama's first term, which was the very lowest point for the overall stock market due to the spillover effects resulting from the disastrous 2008 Financial Meltdown.

But since March 6, 2009, the average stock prices of these same 48 US Savings & Loans Banks have increased by 182% through January 31, 2014, led by San Diego,CA-based BofI's off-the-charts 1,735% stock market price appreciation.

Exclusive of BofI's outsized stock market price appreciation. the average stock price increase of the remaining 47 US Savings & Loans Banks was a much lower, but still respectable, 149%.

This 182% average stock price growth of these 48 US Savings & Loans Banks is consistent with the 179% comparable stock price growth of the largest 211 US Regional Banks.

The investors in and employees of a clear majority of these these 48 US Savings & Loans Banks must be very pleased with the positive impact of actions taken by both the Obama Administration and the US Fed to successfully rescue the US economy from its extremely weakened state caused by the disastrous 2008 US financial meltdown.

On the downside, this 182% average stock price growth of these 48 US Savings & Loans Banks is substantially lower than the 367% comparable growth of the Big 4 US Money Center Banks and the 435% comparable growth of the 10 largest US Regional Banks.

I don't think it is good for the US economy that the largest US Banks continue to do so much better than both the smaller US Regional Banks and the US Savings & Loans Banks.  I think it would be wise for the US Fed, the US Congress and the Obama Administration to all focus more on enhancing the financial strength of the smaller US Regional  Banks and the Savings & Loans Banks.....they should be the true engine of US economic growth and ultimately US job creation.  Their less than ideal financial strength, coupled with the uncertain US economy, are both weighing on acceptable loan risk, and are keeping these smaller Banks from making more loans that would accelerate the US economy.

Below here are the stock market prices of each of these 48 US Savings & Loans Banks on January 31, 2014, on March 6, 2009, and on December 31, 2007, sorted by Percentage Increase from March 6, 2009 to January 31, 2014:
