The historical stock prices of these companies were obtained from the following two excellent internet resources.... Google Finance and MarketWatch Big Charts. The superb Yahoo Finance website was also utilized heavily.
Of these 170 US IPOs in 2013, 31 are Technology Companies, 30 are Biotechs, 23 are Services, 19 are Oil & Gas, 16 are Financials, 16 are REITs, 13 are Health Care other than Biotechs and 22 are in Other Sectors.
From a stock market price perspective, the 16 US REITs are unlike the Other 154 Companies because in order to keep their tax-exempt status, US REITs must distribute each year at least 90% of their taxable income.
The 154 US Non-REIT Companies having IPOs in 2013 posted an average stock market price increase of an incredibly off-the-charts 39% in the extremely short 8 month average period of time through March 7, 2014.
US Biotechnology Companies were clearly the main driver of this stock market price appreciation avalanche.
The 30 US Biotechs with 2013 IPOs had an average stock market increase of a spectacularly off-the-charts 87% in the extremely short 8 month average period of time through March 7, 2014. Whew!
Insys Therapeutics led the Biotech stock market price appreciation stampede with a 693% increase. There were 2 other Biotechs with a stock market price increase of more than 200%. Altogether there were 9 of these 30 US Biotechs which had their stock market prices more than double in this extremely short period of time. And only 3 of these 30 Biotechs had percentage stock market price declines.
Clearly, the US now leads the world in the critical Biotechnology area....and by a huge margin. The dominance and pure excellence of the US Research Universities have played an instrumental role in the massive upper advancement of the US Biotechnology industry in the past five years. And the Obama Administration was a key facilitator here.
The 13 US Health Care Companies other than the 30 Biotechs had an average stock market price increase of a spectacular 47% over this extremely short time spam. Drug Company Karyopharm Therapeutics led the charge here with a 163% stock market price increase. It should be pointed out that 1 of these 13 Health Care Companies was sold three months after its IPO date, after its stock price had already appreciated by an incredible 79%.
There was an incredibly huge number of 31 US Technology Companies having IPOs in 2013 and they registered an average stock price increase of a huge 34% in the very short 8 month average period, led by zulily's 204% stock market price increase. Altogether there were 4 of these Technology Companies which had their stock market prices more than double over this extremely short period of time.
The US Technology Industry, which is driving the US and worldwide economies, would be the first to tell you just how much the Obama Administration has helped them.
The 16 US Financial Companies having IPOs in 2013 had an average stock market price increase of an exceptional 36% in the extremely short 8 month average period through March 7, 2014.
The 19 US Oil & Gas Companies having IPOs in 2013 had an average stock market price increase of a very impressive 33% through March 7, 2014.
It should also be pointed out that this exceptional average stock market price growth for all of these 2013 US IPOs as well as the 900% increase in the number of US IPOs in 2013 over 2008 both occurred when the US Senate was under Democratic Control.
Since the US IPO market is so very key to the success of the US economy, and since 2008 was the last year where the Republicans had pretty much equal control of the US Senate with the Democrats and that was when the US IPO market completely collapsed with only 17 IPOs in 2008, and since the US Senate then became and continued to be strongly under Democratic control with the US IPO market now on complete fire with 170 US IPOs in 2013, then why in the world would a rational person vote to give the Republicans clear control of the US Senate? There is just too much US IPO downside risk, which would impact the US economy drastically.
I think it is helpful to simply lay out below the number of US IPOs in each year where the current Stock Market Capitalizations are more than $100 mil each:
- 17 in 2008
- 34 in 2009
- 76 in 2010
- 84 in 2011
- 101 in 2012
- 170 in 2013
And then here are the similar numbers of US IPOs in each year for just the key Biotech and Technology Companies:
- 0 Biotechs.....and 2 Techs....for a total of 2 in 2008
- 1 Biotech.......and 8 Techs ...for a total of 9 in 2009
- 3 Biotechs....and 17 Techs..for a total of 20 in 2010
- 4 Biotechs....and 23 Techs..for a total of 27 in 2011
- 8 Biotechs....and 27 Techs..for a total of 35 in 2012
- 30 Biotechs..and 31 Techs..for a total of 61 in 2013
But I really do worry though about what happens to the US IPO market and also the US stock market after Obama leaves office. He is the driver of the key US IPO market. After he leaves office, that substantial Obama premium in their common stock prices will then be removed.
I am pretty sure that if it were up to the key US Technology and US Biotechnology Industries, including their employees, they wish Obama could have a third US Presidential term. Just sayin.
