And in a second earlier recent post Florida Smaller Non Profit Hospital Profits, I found an additional 19 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations headquartered in the State of Florida with Total Operating Revenues of more than $100 mil each in the most recent fiscal year but also with Net Assets of less than $400 mil each experienced Total Audited Bottom Line Earnings which were a substantially lower 3.8% of Total Operating Revenues in the most recent year.
Bottom Line Earnings is a combination of Operating Income and Non-Operating Income, with the latter being due predominantly to Investment Returns.
So what about the even smaller individual Florida Non-Profit Hospitals? How did they do?
Fortunately, the State of Florida in its MyFlorida.com website discloses key operating statement information annually for each of its Florida individual Hospitals. The most recent annual Hospital Operating Statement information contained there was for annual fiscal years ended in 2011.
There were 172 individual in the MyFlorida website. Of these 172, 63 of them, or an amazingly high 37% of them, generated individual Hospital Total Operating Revenues of less than $50 mil in 2011.
These smallest 63 Florida individual Non-Profit Hospitals posted Total Bottom Line Losses which were a negative 6.7% of Total Operating Revenues in 2011. Whew!
Here is a summary of Bottom Line Profit Margins of these 172 individual Non-Profit Hospitals by Revenue intervals:
23 Hospitals..2011 Revenues above $400 mil..Bottom Line Profit 7.3% of Revenues
55 Hospitals..2011 Revenues of $100-400 mil.Bottom Line Profit 7.0% of Revenues
31 Hospitals..2011 Revenues of $50-100 mil....Bottom Line Profit 5.1% of Revenues
63 Hospitals..2011 Revenues Below $50 mil..Bottom Line Loss (6.7)% of Revenues
But it gets even worse for these smallest Florida Non-Profit Hospitals.
These 63 Hospitals with 2011 Revenues under $50 mil posted Total Operating Losses of $(312) mil in 2011, which was a negative (30.9)% of Total Operating Revenues.
My clear conclusion is that Florida Republican Governor Rick Scott is dead on.....Florida needs to Expand Medicaid. These struggling Florida Hospitals will be substantially strengthened financially by the huge amount of hospital patient revenues which would flow from Medicaid Expansion.

Let me put some additional numbers out here which shows just how Florida Hospitals and the rest of Florida will benefit greatly from Medicaid Expansion in Florida. Summarizing information supplied by the State of Florida's MyFlorida.com website, these above 172 Non-Profit Florida Hospitals generated Total Operating Income of $1.202 bil in 2011. Their Total Provisions For Bad Debts, which reduced their Total Operating Income, were $4.319 bil in 2011, which was 3.6 times their Total Operating Income of $1.202 bil. And their Total Uncompensated Charity Care Charges Foregone were $6.217 bil in 2011, which was 5.2 times their Total Operating Income of $1.202 bil.
When Florida's Hospitals get substantially enhanced financially like this from Medicaid Expansion in Florida, it only makes sense that hospital patient prices decline, health insurance premiums decline, the State of Florida's financial coffers are substantially enhanced, and Florida's taxes assessed on individuals and businesses also decline.
