Louisiana Non-Profit Hospital Wholescale Dismal Operating Results Show Need For Medicaid Expansion.....An Update

From a review of audited financial statements in the Electronic Municipal Market Access (EMMA), I found 22 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations headquartered in the State of Louisiana with Total Operating Revenues of more than $10 mil each in the most recent audited fiscal year.

How did they do on the profit front in the aggregate?  Well, just horribly any way you look at it.

These 22 Louisiana Non-Profit Hospital Organizations registered Total Operating Losses of $67 mil in the most recent audited fiscal year, which was a very dismal negative (0.8)% of Total Operating Revenues.

Of these 22 Hospitals, 21 of them disclosed their Net Assets.  The 9 of them with Net Assets above $200 mil posted Total Operating Losses of a negative (0.4)% of Total Operating Revenues.  The 12 with Net Assets below $200 mil did even worse, registering Total Operating Losses of a negative (2.2)% of Total Operating Revenues.

The main driver of these dismal Total Operating Losses of $67 mil for these 22 Louisiana Hospital Organizations in the most recent audited fiscal year were Total Bad Debt Earnings Charges of $776 mil.  Uncompensated Charity Care Earnings Charges were also very high.  These two earnings charges were especially so huge because the State of Louisiana has such a high percentage of both Uninsured and Underinsured residents.

With these horrible operating results, so many of these Louisiana Hospitals are severely suffering financially.

The best way to provide the desperately needed financial boost to prop up these suffering hospitals is to simply Expand Medicaid in Louisiana.  This will substantially reduce two Hospital Operating Statement Earnings Charges.....Provisions for Bad Debts and Uncompensated Charity Care Costs.

Below here are the Operating Income (Losses) and Operating Revenues of these 22 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations headquartered in the State of Louisiana with Total Operating Revenues of more than $10 mil each in the most recent fiscal year, sorted by Net Asset size:

* These four hospitals are part of Christus Health.

LSU Health Care Services Division amounts above include the operations of Louisiana's 7 Public Hospitals: Earl Long at Baton Rouge, University Medical Center at Lafayette, WO Moss Regional Medical Center at St. Charles, Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center at Independence, Chabert Medical Center at Houma, and the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans.

Shreveport-based LSU Health Sciences Center above amounts include hospital operations in Shreveport, Monroe and Pineville.

LSU Health states in its EMMA filing that with its many hospitals located throughout the State of Louisiana, it provides health care services for an amazingly high 75% of the State's indigent populationIf Medicaid were Expanded in Louisiana, the huge Operating Losses of both LSU Health Care Services Division and LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport would be pretty much eliminated, and that should also benefit the State of Louisiana's financial coffers and thus also Louisiana citizens.

Bottom Line Operating Results were also very weak in the aggregate.

Of these 22 Hospitals, 20 of them disclosed their Bottom Line Profits or Losses, which are a combination of Operating Income or Loss and Non-Operating Income or Loss.

These 20 Louisiana Non-Profit Hospital Organizations registered Total Operating Profits which were a very modest 2.1% of Total Operating Revenues in the most recent audited fiscal year.

The 8 of them with Net Assets above $200 mil posted Total Operating Profits of a modest 3.1% of Total Operating Revenues.  The 12 with Net Assets below $200 mil did even much worse, registering Total Operating Losses of $14 mil, which was an exceedingly weak negative (0.7)% of Total Operating Revenues.
