Missouri Smaller Non-Profit Hospital Dismal Profits Show Need For Medicaid Expansion

From a review of audited financial statements in the Electronic Municipal Market Access (EMMA), I found a huge number of 38 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations headquartered in the State of Missouri with Total Operating Revenues of more than $10 mil each in the most recent audited fiscal year.

To understand what is going on with Missouri Non-Profit Hospital Organization Earnings, it is helpful to break them down by how financially strong the Hospitals are.....or by their Net Assets (the Excess of Total Assets over Total Liabilities).

When this breakdown is done, there is one very crystal-clear conclusion.......the weaker the financial strength of the Non-Profit Hospital Organization, the lower the earnings.

Bottom Line Earnings is a combination of Operating Income and Non-Operating Income, with the latter being due predominantly to Investment Returns from Stocks and Bonds, or their equivalents.

The 28 smaller Missouri Non-Profit Hospital Organizations with Net Assets below $400 mil each generated Total Bottom Line Profits as a % of Total Operating Revenues of a dismal 1.9% in the most recent audited fiscal year.  This compares to a much higher 7.1% for the 10 large Missouri Non-Profit Hospital Organizations with Net Assets above $400 mil.

Yeah, the 10 large Missouri Hospitals are doing just great.....but clearly not most of the 28 smaller ones.

The main driver of this dismal Total Operating Income of $70.2 mil for these 28 smaller Missouri Hospitals in the most recent audited fiscal year were Total Bad Debt Earnings Charges of $346 mil.

Yeah that's right, these 28 smaller Missouri Non-Profit Hospital Organizations generated Total Bottom Line Profits exclusive of Bad Debt Charges of $416.2 mil in the most recent fiscal year, which was nearly 6 times the reported Total Bottom Line Profits of $70.2 mil.

Uncompensated Charity Care Earnings Charges were also very high.

When the 28 Missouri Non-Profit Hospital Organizations with Net Assets of less than $400 mil each are generating Total Bottom Line Profits of a very modest 1.9% of their Total Operating Revenues, then they are struggling and in dire need of financial help.

The best way to provide this needed financial boost is to simply Expand Medicaid in Missouri.  This will substantially reduce two Hospital Operating Statement Earnings Charges.....Provisions for Bad Debts and Uncompensated Charity Care Costs.

From a review of audited financial statements in the Electronic Municipal Market Access (EMMA), below here are the Bottom Line Profits and Operating Revenues of the 38 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations headquartered in the State of Missouri with Total Operating Revenues of more than $10 mil each in the most recent fiscal year, stratified by Net Asset size:
