The total common stock market capitalization of these 117 Companies at the most recent date May 16, 2014 was $1,985 bil.....yeah, that's nearly $2 trillion.
The Big 5 Tech here had a total common stock market capitalization of $1,310 bil. On the other hand, the total common stock market capitalization of the remaining 112 Companies combined was a substantially lower $675 bil.
The US Technology Index hasn't dropped too much in the most recent three months. That is because these indices are market weighted and the Big 5 Techs in Silicon Valley and large Techs in the rest of the US have performed fairly well on the stock market price front.
The Big 5 California Silicon Valley Tech Companies have experienced an equally-weighted average stock market price increase of 5% from February 26, 2014 to the most recent date May 16, 2014.
On the other hand, the remaining 112 San Francisco and Silicon Valley Tech Companies have experienced an equally-weighted average stock market price decline of 8%.
84 of these 112 Non Big 5 Tech Companies, or precisely 75% of them, had stock market price declines from February 26, 2014 to May 16, 2014:
- 2 of them had stock market price declines above 40%
- 6 of them had stock market price declines above 30%
- 23 of them had stock market price declines above 20%
- 43 of them had stock market price declines of 10% or more
But you know what, it's not just them. The above 112 Technology Companies have all had their common stocks trading for over 6 years each. And so many of them have had their stock market prices also collapse in the most recent 3 months.
It's pretty clear to me that things really aren't now going too well in the San Francisco and Silicon Valley areas of Technology.
US Technology is so key to the overwhelming majority of US Non-Technology Companies. And it is also so critical to the country and to the US economy. And frankly, it's also critical to US Security. The US Technology Companies must keep their present huge edge over the rest of the world.
The US Congress should get its act together and pass a permanent R&E Tax Credit in short order. It shouldn't happen retroactively after the fact.....that is just crazy ineffective US economic policy. And I think the R&E Tax Credit should be designed where it is much more lucrative to the smaller and medium-sized US Technology Companies than it is to the Giant US Tech Companies. And the R&E tax credit should be a stand alone bill, with no tax loopholes attached to it.
