Missouri Companies and Non-Profit Hospitals Audited Earnings Were $15.2 Bil in 2013, up 176% Over 2008

Since Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and the Missouri State Legislature are discussing how to substantially increase health care coverage to the many Missouri uninsured and underinsured citizens and to do so in the optimally fair way to all parties, and also since Indiana Governor Mike Pence and US Health and Human Services Cabinet Secretary Sylvia Burwell have just recently struck such a groundbreaking, very forward-thinking deal that accomplishes just that, as an economic backdrop, I think it would be helpful in several posts to research how Missouri companies, hospitals and the overall State of Missouri's economy have all been doing financially.

In this first post I will be addressing how Missouri Companies and Missouri Non-Profit Hospital Organizations have been doing on the audited earnings front.

From a very thorough review of SEC filings and of the excellent Google Finance website, I found a large number of 51 Companies headquartered in the State of Missouri with Stock Market Capitalizations of at least $100 mil now, or for non-public companies filing with the SEC with Total Book Value of Stockholders' Equity of at least $100 mil now, and also with annual audited financial statements filed with the SEC which included financial information covering all fiscal years from 2007 to 2013.

In addition, from a very thorough review of the excellent Electronic Municipal Market Access (EMMA), I found 9 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations with Total Net Assets of at least $400 mil and which also had audited financial statements for all fiscal years from 2007 to 2013.

These 60 Missouri Companies and Non-Profit Hospital Organizations generated Total Audited Earnings from Continuing Operations of $15.182 bil in the most recent fiscal year 2013, which was an impressive 176% increase from the $5.492 bil of comparable earnings in the financial meltdown year of 2008.

The reason I combined the Missouri Non-Profit Hospital Organizations with the Missouri For-Profit Companies filing with the SEC is that Missouri is blessed to have substantially large Non-Profit Hospital Organizations headquartered there, particularly one ..... the giant Ascension Health.

In fact, the huge St. Louis area based Ascension Health generated Total Audited Earnings in the most recent two fiscal years combined of a massive $5.254 bil, with only one Missouri-headquartered For-Profit Company topping that ..... Monsanto ..... which generated $5.263 bil in Total Audited Earnings in the most recent two years combined, only a paltry $9 mil higher earnings than that registered by Ascension Health.  Whoa! ..... a Non-Profit Hospital Organization with $5.254 bil of two-year Total Audited Earnings.  It is no wonder why US Health Care Costs per capita are so much higher than that in any other country.

Further, the Missouri Company with the second highest Total Audited Earnings in the most recent two years combined is the very well-run Emerson Electric at $4.250 bil, and the third highest with Total Two-Year Audited Earnings of $3.288 bil is the very well-regarded Express Scripts.  And then there is a massive drop down to $1.256 bil of Total Audited Earnings in the most recent two years combined registered by the very highly regarded O'Reilly Automotive.

Also, the 9 Missouri Headquartered Non-Profit Hospital Organizations have seen their Total Audited Earnings (Excess of Revenues and Gains Over Expenses and Losses) go from Total Audited Losses of $1.924 bil in the financial meltdown year of 2008 to Total Audited Earnings of $3.118 bil in the most recent fiscal year ended 2013, for a Total One-Year Audited Earnings Improvement of a spectacularly off-the-charts $5.042 bil.  Another Whoa!

Below here are the Audited Earnings (Losses) of each of these 51 largest Missouri For-Profit Companies and 9 largest Missouri Non-Profit Hospital Organizations for Fiscal Year Ends (FYEs) 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007:
