Non-Profit Hospitals With Other Than December Year Ends Have Four-Year Net Assets Up 63% Under Obama and Obamacare

In an earlier post, from a quick review of the Electronic Municipal Market Access (EMMA), I found 165 US Non-Profit Hospital Organizations with other than December Fiscal Year Ends (FYEs) which had Net Assets above $400 mil each at the most recent date reported.

In this post, I am updating this earlier study by performing a bit more thorough review of EMMA, and I found 40 additional US Non-Profit Hospital Organizations.

Below here are these 205 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations I found with other than December fiscal year ends and with Net Asset positions of more than $400 mil at the most recent date reported:

In my most recent post, the 92 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations with December FYEs and with Net Assets at June 30, 2013 of more than $400 mil each experienced a Total Net Assets increase of a massive 78% during the first 4 1/2 years of the Obama Administration.

As you can see from the above chart, the longer the Net Asset period length, the higher the Net Asset Percentage increase.  The 65 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations with a 4.00 year period length, nearly all with June FYEs, had a Total Net Asset increase of a very robust 63% and the 101 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations with a 3.75 year period length had a Total Net Asset increase of a robust 46%.

Probably more than anything else, the long-term financial status of US Non-Profit Hospitals will determine ultimately how successful the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will be.

The key single measure of the financial strength of a Non-Profit Hospital Organization is its Net Assets, the excess of its Total Assets over its Total Liabilities.

When I combine my sample of December and Non-December FYE Non-profit Hospital Organizations, there are 309 of them in total with a Total Net Asset Position of $443.7 bil, and a significant number of these are Net Assets Positions earlier than June 2013.  From my past research, the total number of hospitals included in these 309 Non-Profit Hospital Organizations represent significantly less than half of all non-profit hospitals.  Thus my estimate is that the Total Net Assets of all Non-profit Hospital Organizations now is above $700 bil.  When I project this out, I get Total Net Assets of all Non-profit Hospital Organizations of above $1 trillion at the end of the Obama Administration's second term.

These Non-profit hospitals have operated on all cylinders financially during the Obama Administration.  It is pretty clear to me that these 309 large Non-profit Hospital Organizations have the exceptional financial strength to make the ACA work very effectively.

Hospitals have done a great job so far in substantially reducing the percentage increase in Total US Health Care costs in each of the most recent three years.  And with their substantially enhanced Net Asset Positions, or Financial Strength, during the Obama Administration and under Obamacare, they will be doing an even better job in future years.

So, the Net Asset (Financial Strength) Enhancement of the Non-Profit Hospitals during the Obama Administration and under Obamacare has been truly remarkable.  The main driver here is the very strong Bottom Line Profits of these Non-Profit Hospital Organizations, which were a huge 9.4% of Total Revenues in the most recent year for the 41 largest Non-Profit Hospital Organizations, just short of 9.6% of Total Revenues generated by the 30 Dow Industrial companies companies.

When I put this altogether, with the huge Bottom-Line Profits and massive increases in Net Assets of the Non-Profit Hospital Organizations, and with all of this occurring when the Non-Profit Hospitals were able to also substantially bend down the US Health Care Cost Curve in each of the most recent three years, and with future Non-Profit Hospital Organizations Hospital Operating Income being bolstered by both many of the Uninsured getting insurance and by the many of the Underinsured getting much better insurance, the logical focus for reducing the US Deficits in the long term should be on reducing much further the amounts Medicare pays to the Hospitals, rather than on reducing Medicare benefits received by the middle and lower classes.

To get to a good and fair grand debt bargain right now, I think there has to be in total over the next ten years at least another $500 bil reduction in Medicare payments to hospitals and to other health care providers.
