South Carolina Non-Profit Hospital Organizations Net Income 8.4% of Revenues in 2012

From a review of audited annual financial statements shown at Electronic Municipal Market Access (EMMA), I found 7 South Carolina Non-Profit Hospital Organizations with Net Assets above $400 mil each and which have audited financial statements for each of the most recent 4 years.

These 7 South Carolina Non-Profit Hospital Organizations generated Total Bottom Line Net Income of a very robust 8.4% of Total Operating Revenues in 2012 and also a bit lower but still very solid 7.0% in 2013.

Three of the 7 South Carolina Non-Profit Hospital Organizations had Net Income Profit Margins of 11.8% or higher in 2012.

The only problem with these strong operating results of these South Carolina Non-Profit Hospital Organizations in 2012 was that instead of taking the high road and responsibly reducing their Patient Service Pricing, some of these these South Carolina Non-Profit Hospital Organizations elected to retain these excessively high Bottom Line Profits, which also added to both their Net Assets and their treasure chest of Investments in Stocks and Bonds.

Below are the Bottom Line Net Income and Total Operating Revenues for these 7 South Carolina Non-Profit Hospital Organizations for 2013 and for 2012:

In its State Health Dept website, South Carolina has instituted an outstanding, cool interactive tool related to all kinds of key data on all 60 of its acute care individual Hospitals.  The most recent year of financial data is for 2011.

These 60 South Carolina Hospitals generated Total what the website called "All Profit" of $914 mil in 2011, which was 8.0% of Total Revenues.  This Bottom Line Net Income Margin of a strong 8.0% of Revenues is consistent with the earlier 8.4% Profit Margin in 2012 related to the above 7 South Carolina Non-Profit Hospital Organizations.  Below here are these 60 individual South Carolina Hospitals, broken down between Urban and Rural Hospitals:

As you can see in the above chart, there are some of these South Carolina Hospitals doing fantastically well on the earnings front.....and other ones, especially many of the Rural Hospitals, not doing so well.

These 60 individual South Carolina Hospitals are predominately Non-Profit Hospitals.

There is a very positive aspect to these excessively high Bottom Line Profits of some of these South Carolina Hospitals.  These incredibly high Profits are getting added to the Net Assets (Financial Strength) of these South Carolina Hospital Organizations.

Thus a key beneficiary of this should be South Carolina citizens electing to buy health insurance on the Health Insurance Exchange.  This exceptional Net Asset growth driven by these exceedingly high Bottom Line Profits gives these South Carolina Hospital Organizations the financial flexibility to moderate their pricing for hospital and other health care procedures in their negotiations with health insurance companies which ultimately determines what insurance premium prices are set at by health insurance companies on the Health Insurance Exchange.

And armed with audited financial data concerning the excessively high profits earned by some of these South Carolina Non-Profit Hospital Organizations, Health Insurance Companies should be able to do a much better job in representing their policy holders, including those getting Health Insurance on the Health Insurance Exchange.
