In deriving Pretax Income, I start with Pretax Income under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and then exclude several clearly unusual very large items relative to Pretax Income, such as Intangible Asset Impairments, Gains and Losses on Debt Retirements, Gains and Losses on Asset Dispositions, and Special Litigation Gains and Losses.
These 180 superb California Corps had Total Pretax Income in 2011 of $272.6 bil, up a robust 27% over 2010, and by an even more robust 90% over 2009.
As expected, the Technology Sector dominates the California corporate landscape, with 76 Tech companies here comprising 42% of the total 180 companies and an even higher 48% of the Total Pretax Income in 2011.
These 76 Technology companies had Total Pretax Income of $132.1 bil in 2011, which was a very strong 26% increase over 2010, and more than doubling to a 104% increase over 2009.
Apple comprised a massive 26% of the Total Pretax Income of all 76 of these California Techs. I think it would be much better for the US economy and for US job creation if this very high Apple Pretax Income mix were reduced.
The two Big Oil Corps in California…..Chevron and Occidental Petroleum…..generated Total Pretax Income in 2011 of a massive $58.1 bil in 2011, and even surpassed the exceptional performance of the Technology companies. These two Big Oil Corps had their Total Pretax Income increase by 47% in 2011 over 2010, and by an incredible 147% over 2009.
The 19 Finance Corps in California had very healthy increases in Pretax Income in 2011 of 30% over 2010 and of 72% over 2009. Wells Fargo comprised a massive 59% of the 2011 Total Pretax Income of all of these California Finance Corps. Frankly, I think it would be very helpful to the US economy and to US job creation if Wells Fargo were to break up…..and the same goes for a handful of the US Big Financial Giants headquartered in other US States.
The Leisure and Entertainment companies in California, led by Walt Disney and DirecTV, also performed just fine in 2011.
A soft spot were the California Health Care companies, which had their Total Pretax Income in 2011 increase by only 1% over 2010, and by 18% over 2009. On the positive front, this substantially reduced earnings increase in 2011 shows how the Affordable HealthCare Act (ACA) has reduced health care costs in the US in 2011, when the ACA started partially kicking in.
Another soft spot were the California Retailing companies. But it should be pointed out that the GAP, with its substantial stock buyback program, performed substantially better on an Earnings Per Share basis then it did on a Pretax Income basis.
Clearly, the Obama Administration has created an economic environment in the past two years that has permitted these California Corporations to flat out flourish. California citizens should be very proud of the operating performance of their superb California Corporations in the most recent two years.
For this superb earnings growth to continue in 2012 at just a bit short of the same robust pace as that in 2011, especially for California’s many stellar technology companies, it would be necessary for both the 100% first-year tax expensing of equipment and computer software purchases to be extended for the remainder of 2012, and for the Research and Experimentation Tax Credit to be made permanent, somewhat expanded, and much simplified, starting in 2012.
